NYX Eyeshadow Base

NYX Eyeshadow BaseIt’s not often you see drugstore brands offering eyeshadow bases, so I was pretty interested in trying the NYX Eyeshadow Base with Pearl. It looks high quality from the outside, but the inside story is something else.

I started off by rubbing my pinky finger in the base and applying it to my clean eye lids. My first problem was that the base didn’t distribute evenly, so I tried tapping the base instead in order to have a strong layer underneath the eyeshadow. My next problem was the very concentrated amounts of nano-glitter in the base – it sort of looked like I had just applied white glittery eyeshadow before my junior varsity cheerleading game. I’m too old for that, unfortunately.

Next, I gave almost every color category of eyeshadows a chance at this eyeshadow base. First I tried a smokey eye – I found it pretty hard to blend the eyeshadow colors together using my brush, and I looked silly. I also tested the base with the L’Oreal HiP matte shadow, and while the colors were noticeably stronger with the base, the glitter in the base stole the show. For a more day appropriate look, I tested the base with the neutral colors in the Revlon ColorStay 12 Hour Eye Shadow, and I decided that the base works best when you don’t want a complicated eyeshadow look. For instance, on the days when I wanted to brighten my eyes up with a lighter color, I used the NYX eyeshadow base because it enhanced the color and the glitter behaved better beneath calmer colors.

But eyeshadow base is not all about intensifying your eyeshadow pigments – it’s equally important to have a base that gives your eyeshadow the lockdown on your eyelids. In all of the cases I described above, the base gave my eyeshadow looks more lasting power than without the base, but the eyeshadow’s lasting power diminished after 3 to 4 hours, while the glitter had moved its party beneath my eyes and on my lashes. Not cool.

The one nice thing about this base is that it provided crease free eyeshadow – even after the hours of wearing it underneath eyeshadows, the texture of the look was still consistent.

Unfortunately, this base disappointed me with its lack luster performance (glitter excluded). I gave it many chances by trying different looks, but I wasn’t impressed, except with the simple & neutral eyeshadow looks. I’ll keep it around, but I won’t bring it with me on a secluded island. 3 stars on The Cos View scale.
