NYX Single Eyeshadow

NYX Eye Shadow

Ever since I tried my first NYX product, they have been on my radar.  And when I came across the incredibly large NYX Single Eyeshadow selection it again reminded me immediately of another fun three-lettered brand that is also known for their vast array of highly pigmented eyeshadows.

Because different colors of the same product can behave differently, I picked up a handful of colors that took advantage of the full range of colors NYX offers with their shadows (including hot pinks, matte yellows, lime greens, neutrals, whites, blacks, and every other color you can imagine!  …Can you imagine over 150 colors?).

And with a price tag of $5.50 (and even lower on certain sites) it’s quite easy to get carried away with your purchase.  In fact, it’s the low price tag, wide range of colors, and high pigmentation that attract many aspiring and brand-new makeup artists to this product to build up their kit.  They are extremely easy to depot (to remove the eyeshadow pan from the black plastic packaging) and place in a custom palette for convenience.  These shadows also come in palettes of 3 or 5, but I always like to create my own of 15 to 20.

As you probably have assumed, there are multiple finishes including Metallic, Shimmer, Matte, and Frosty.  I found that some were much more pigmented than others, and it didn’t quite matter which finish it was (although a few of the Mattes were the main culprits).  While I didn’t try out all 150 that is something to keep in mind when you’re on your search so swatch if and when possible.  I also noticed that all finishes brought up excess product when I would run my brush on them to pick up product which is not my favorite – it’s like watching my money get wasted every time I want to use this shadow.  It wasn’t as bad as others I’ve seen, but bad enough to note.

Paired with a base, the shadows work wonders versus without.  Without a primer, I saw more fallout, less saturation, and it was a little more difficult to blend the way I wanted to.  With my favorite primer, however, it was a different story.  The colors blended like a breeze, stayed longer and didn’t crease.  Applied in the morning, the eye without primer started to fade by the mid to late afternoon but didn’t crease at all and was easy enough to touch up (using a tissue beneath my eye to catch fallout).

For the price I’m paying for these I don’t mind the negatives that this product has, because the positives definitely outweigh them.  The color selection, amount of pigment, and staying power make these a definite go-to when I or clients are on the search for shadows for cheap.  4 stars in my book!
